Instructions to Use WATCO Lacquer Clear Spray

Surface Preparation - 1st Step

All Surfaces: Ensure all surfaces are thoroughly clean, dry, and devoid of wax, grease, oil, shellac, mildew, and polishes. Use a wax stripper for wax removal, a paint stripper for shellac, and a 10% household bleach solution for mildew.

Previously Finished Surfaces: For optimal adhesion, ensure surfaces are clean, dry, and free from old finishes, dust, dirt, oils, or any foreign matter. Remove old finishes in poor condition. Sand surfaces to achieve a smooth finish. Eliminate all sanding dust using either a vacuum or a cloth dampened with mineral spirits.

Stained or Painted Wood: Follow the manufacturer's instructions for applying stain or paint. Ensure the surface is completely dry before applying clear lacquer for wood.

Unfinished Wood: Sand the surface using 150-220 grit sandpaper and remove all sanding dust with a vacuum or a rag dampened with mineral spirits. If using filler or putty, ensure it does not contain wax and allow ample time for thorough drying.

Application Instructions

Ventilation and Conditions: Ensure adequate ventilation throughout the application process. Avoid applying in direct sunlight. Apply only when both air and surface temperatures range between 55-90°F (13-32°C), with relative humidity below 85%. Prior to application over white or pastel paints or stains, conduct a test in an inconspicuous area to prevent any undesired appearance.

Preparation Before Use: Shake the can vigorously for 2 minutes before application.

Spraying Technique: Spray light coats from a distance of 8 to 12 inches from the surface to prevent runs and sags. Allow the finish to dry for 2 hours before recoating.

Recoating Guidelines: Recoat only when the previous coat has dried clear and feels hard. It's advisable to apply several light coats for a superior finish rather than one heavy coat. If any coat has dried for more than 6 hours, lightly sand the surface with 220 grit sandpaper before recoating. Follow the same application directions for additional coats. A minimum of 3 coats is recommended.
