Instructions to Use WATCO Danish Oil
Surface Preparation: Prior to applying WATCO Danish Oil, it's essential to prepare the wood surface thoroughly. Begin by removing any existing finishes using sandpaper or stripper. Next, ready the bare wood for finishing by sanding along the grain. Start with #120 grit sandpaper and progress through #150, #180, and finally #220 grits for a smooth surface. Before application, ensure removal of all sanding dust and dirt using a vacuum, tack cloth, or a rag dampened with mineral spirits. Any grease or glue residue should also be removed with a rag dampened in mineral spirits.
Testing Color: Before proceeding with staining, it's crucial to verify the desired color. Perform a test by applying the stain in an inconspicuous area to ensure it meets your expectations.
Optional Step: For softwoods like pine, it's advisable to pre-treat the wood surface before application. Lightly wipe the surface with a cloth dampened with Watco Danish Oil Natural finish. Immediately ensure the surface is completely dry before proceeding with the application process.
Application: Ensure the air temperature ranges between 60-90°F (16-32°C), with relative humidity below 85%, before application. During damp or humid conditions, expect longer dry times. Thoroughly mix or shake the material to redistribute any settled pigment before use. Stir occasionally during application. Prior to starting the entire job, perform a test sample on a small inconspicuous area.
Apply one coat of Watco Danish Oil liberally using a brush or clean, lint-free rag. Allow it to penetrate for 15 minutes, then remove excess by wiping with a rag in the direction of the wood grain. If additional coats are necessary, reapply, allowing an extra 15 minutes for penetration. Ensure to wipe the surface completely dry. Removing all excess material is crucial for proper dry time and adhesion of the topcoat.
Protection: For added protection, consider applying any Rust-Oleum® polyurethane finish over the Watco Danish Oil. Allow a minimum of 72 hours of dry time before applying the polyurethane finish. Darker colors may necessitate slightly longer drying times.
Protection: For additional protection, any Rust-Oleum polyurethane finish can be applied over the Watco Danish Oil. Allow a minimum of 72 hours dry time prior to applying the polyurethane finish. Darker colors may require slightly longer dry time.
