Instructions to Apply WATCO Tung Oil

Surface Preparation:Before applying Watco Tung Oil Finish, prepare the wood surface by removing any existing finishes using sandpaper or stripper. Then, sand the bare wood in the direction of the grain, starting with #120 grit sandpaper and progressing through #150, #180, and #220 grits for a smooth finish. Remove all sanding dust and dirt with a vacuum, tack cloth, or rag dampened with mineral spirits. Additionally, use a rag dampened with mineral spirits to remove grease, oils, or adhesive residues. Ensure the wood is dry and free from subsurface moisture before proceeding with the Tung Oil Finish application.

To protect surrounding areas from drips or spills, cover them with a solvent-resistant drop cloth overlaid with newspaper. It's essential to wear safety goggles and chemical-resistant gloves to shield the eyes and skin during the application process.

Application: Ensure adequate ventilation throughout the application process. Apply Watco Tung Oil Finish only when the air and surface temperatures are between 50°F (10°C) and 95°F (35°C). Use the product at full strength, and perform a test in an inconspicuous area before full application.

Before starting the project, shake the container thoroughly. Apply a test area to check the color on a hidden section of the wood. For uniform color and appearance, complete the entire project with the same stain color as indicated on the label. Flood the surface with a brush or cloth, applying additional finish to areas that absorb all the liquid. Allow the finish to penetrate for 15 minutes, then thoroughly wipe the surface with a clean, lint-free cloth to remove excess oil.

After 24 hours of dry time, apply a second coat, allowing the Tung Oil Finish to penetrate the surface for 5-10 minutes before buffing with a clean, lint-free cloth. For the best appearance, two light coats are recommended. The gloss level will increase with additional coats. Ensure the wood is completely dry (minimum 24 hours) before use.

Cleanup: After use, clean application tools and equipment with mineral spirits or paint thinner, and dispose of them properly. For guidance on the disposal of any unused product, it's advisable to contact your local or state government environmental control agency.
