How to Apply Varathane Varathane Polyurethane
Refurbishing: Reviving finished wood doesn't always require stripping away the old coating entirely. Over time, furniture polishes can leave residues on wood surfaces, hindering the adhesion of Varathane Triple Thick Polyurethane. To ensure optimal application, it's crucial to rid the surface of any wax, silicones, oils, or other contaminants through thorough cleaning and abrasion before applying Varathane Triple Thick Polyurethane.
Surface Preparation: Ensure that the surface is clean, dry, and devoid of any wax, grease, dust, or other contaminants. Smooth the area by sanding progressively with sandpaper ranging from 120 to 220 grit. Vacuum the surface to eliminate any dust particles. Finally, wipe the surface with a clean, lint-free cloth to prepare it for further treatment.
Staining: For optimal outcomes, apply Varathane Wood Stains before using Varathane Triple Thick Polyurethane. If using other stains, adhere to the recommended dry times provided by the stain manufacturer. Once the stains are fully cured, apply Varathane Triple Thick Polyurethane directly over them. It's advisable to conduct a compatibility test on a sample before full application.
Application: Before use, stir the product thoroughly, especially if it has been sitting for more than an hour. Avoid shaking the container. Ensure adequate ventilation during application. Apply only when the air temperature ranges between 55-90°F (13-32°C) and the relative humidity is below 85%. Utilize a high-quality synthetic bristle brush for application, following the direction of the wood grain, applying one thick, smooth, uniform coat. If refinishing a previously coated surface or applying a second coat, sand with 220 grit sandpaper beforehand.
Dry Time: Dry times are calculated based on conditions of 70°F and 50% relative humidity. However, factors such as temperature, humidity, and ventilation can influence drying times. Expect longer drying times in cooler conditions. Varathane Triple Thick Polyurethane typically dries to the touch in about 2 hours and can be recoated within the same timeframe. Allow a full 48 hours for curing before lightly using the project, and wait for 7 days for complete cure.
