Instructions to Apply Our Zinsser Wood Bleach
Surface Preparation: Before beginning the bleaching process, ensure the wood surface is free from any dirt, oil, grease, or other contaminants by washing it with soap and water or a suitable commercial detergent. Rinse the surface thoroughly with fresh water and allow it to dry completely. If there are any previous coatings that are loosely adhered, remove them by scraping and sanding. After sanding, remove all sanding dust and dirt using a vacuum, and address any remaining grease or glue with a clean rag dampened with mineral spirits. This preparation ensures the wood is clean and ready for the bleaching treatment.
Application: To prepare for the bleaching process, spread a solvent-resistant drop cloth around the work area to protect against drips or spills. Ensure personal safety by wearing safety goggles and chemical-resistant gloves to shield the eyes and skin. The extent of bleaching will vary depending on the type of wood and the duration of treatment.
Begin by applying Solution A with a new sponge, ensuring complete saturation of the area to be bleached. Allow the solution to stand for 5 minutes for softwoods and 10 minutes for hardwoods. While the surface is still wet, use another sponge to apply Solution B over Solution A. Allow the treated area to stand overnight to dry completely.
After drying, lightly sand the surface to remove any residue and further lighten the wood. If a lighter shade is desired, the process can be repeated as needed. This method effectively brightens and evens out the color of the wood surface, providing a uniform and aesthetically pleasing result.
