If you are fond of collecting artworks, you might want to create one yourself through the use of printable stencils. With the help of stencils, you can create creative linear images on any hard surfaces. Here’s how we stain and stencil a wooden create with Rustoleum p

First and Foremost:

Locate a well-ventilated and dust-free area to work in. Next, cover its surroundings using a drop cloth to protect from overspray. Also, do not forget to wear gloves and mask while painting, especially, when you’re spraying in a confined space like a garage.

Here’re the Materials You’ll Require:

  • Drop Cloth
  • Painter’s Tape or Masking Paper
  • Medium Grit Sandpaper
  • Latex Gloves
  • Stencil
  • Rust-Oleum Stops Rust Protective Enamel Spray
  • Rust-Oleum Varathane Premium Fast Dry Wood Stains
  • Polyurethane

Step 1: Prepare the Wooden Crate

After finding a suitable place to work in, it’s time to prepare your wooden crate by sanding and cleaning thoroughly. To sand the surface, first, use medium grit sandpaper of 120 grit followed by 150 and 180 grit sandpaper. Now, use a lint-free or tack cloth to wipe the sanding dust away from the surface and make sure that it is free from all the debris.

Step 2: Stain the Wooden Crate

To stain the surface with Rust-Oleum Varathane Premium Fast Dry Wood Stains in Dark Walnut follow the instruction mentioned in the below section. It will help you in staining the surface effectively.

  • First, stir the Stain thoroughly.
  • Apply a small bit of stain using a lint-free cloth or paint brush to an inconspicuous area of the wooden crate. If it is absorbing well, move on the rest of the piece.
  • Apply a generous amount of stain onto the surface in the direction of the wood grain, working in manageable sections
  • Do not leave an excess amount of stain on the plank, as it may leave blotches and an uneven surface.
  • Let the stain sit on the surface for a few minutes.
  • Wipe the excess stain off using clean lint-free cloth. Do not let the stain dry before wiping excess.
  • Once the entire crate is completely stained, set them aside to dry for one hour.

Step 3: Tap the Stencil to the Wooden Crate

After letting it dry for one hour, you can tape the stencil to the crate using painter’s touch. Now, apply Rust-Oleum Stops Rust Protective Enamel Spray in Gloss White on to the stencil. However, you should take care of the following instruction that also mentioned on the side of the cane:

  • Shake the spray-can vigorously for a minute and make sure that mixing ball starts to rattle.
  • In case mixing ball fails to rattle, “Do not strike spray-can. Contact Rust-Oleum."
  • Hold the cane upright 10-16” from a surface and spray in a steady back and forth motion.
  • Instead of applying one heavy coat, use more light coats over the surface.
  • Shake the cane often while spraying.
  • Once you’ve applied 2-3 light coats, set the crate aside to dry completely for 24 hours.

Step 4: Polyurethane

Polyurethane creates a tough coat over the wooden surface and protects it from scratches as well as other damages. Also, it keeps the surface safe against dirt, grime, and moisture. To coat your wooden crate with Triple Thick Polyurethane, follow the same technique that you did for staining the crate.

Step 5: Finish

Let the crate cure completely for 48 hours before using.
